2026 Midterm Voter Information

Election Day: November 3, 2026

Make SURE YOU’RE REGISTERED TO VOTE

Every registered California voter should receive a paper ballot in the mail by mid-October.

The deadline to register to vote in the November 3rd election is Monday, October 19th.

Haven’t received your ballot?

If you don’t receive your ballot by mid-October, it may mean you’re not registered or your ballot was lost.

Here’s what to do:

3 WAYS TO VOTE

There are three ways to vote: in person, at a drop box, or by mail. Which option is right for you? Explore your choices below.

You can vote in person on November 3rd at your polling place. You can also vote in person before Election Day. Early, in-person voting locations will be listed here on October 5th. Your polling place will be listed here.

  • Same day voter registration, replacement ballots, accessible voting machines, and assistance (including language assistance) are available.
  • Your ballot is processed immediately, eliminating postmark or delivery uncertainties.
  • If there is a problem with your registration or any other issue, request a provisional ballot. After an investigation, your vote will be counted.
  • The potential for interference at early voting locations and polling places is unlikely in California.
  • Possible long wait times or lines.
  • Possible need for travel time and/or time off work.

Advantages

  • Combines the convenience of completing a ballot at home with immediate, secure submission that avoids mail delivery and postmark risks.
  • Drop boxes have security features to prevent tampering. Ballots are collected by Election Office employees daily.
  • There are multiple drop box locations that will be accessible 24/7 from October 5th to 8:00 pm on November 3rd.
  • Drop box locations will be listed here on October 5th.
  • You must place your completed ballot in your signed return envelope in an official drop box in your county anytime between October 5th and 8:00 pm on November 3rd.
  • Might be further away than an in-person polling location.

Advantages

  • Private and convenient
  • Easier for people with mobility issues
  • Ballots must be postmarked on or before and received no later than seven days after Election Day.
  • Mail your ballot as early as possible. It should be postmarked no later than  Friday, October 23rd to ensure it’s received on time.
  • Your ballot may not get postmarked on the day you put it in a mailbox. Instead, bring your ballot to a post office and get a hand-stamped postmark from a postal employee no later than October 23rd.
  • If you must mail your ballot after October 23rd (including on Election Day), do it at a post office and get a hand-stamped postmark from a postal employee. Remember, though: Do everything you can to have your ballot postmarked by October 23rd to ensure receipt.
  • After October 23rd, it’s better to place your ballot in an official drop box in your county. Secure, official vote-by-mail drop box locations for the November 3rd Election can be found here on October 5th.
  • You can authorize someone to return your vote-by-mail ballot on your behalf; just be sure to fill out the authorization section found on the outside of your ballot return envelope. Anyone may mail your ballot for you, put it in a drop box, or drop it off at an in-person voting location, as long as they are not paid per ballot.
